Although it has become a common practice for medical schemes to adjust their rates upwards every year, there are concerns that they will increase significantly for 2020.

Medical costs in South Africa have skyrocketed while the state hospitals are in chaos and no one can dare to be admitted.

The problems of those who do not have a medical aid are far worse than those who now have to accept a sharp rise in rates.

Of the schemes, rates increase by up to 11%, which has become so high for many members of a scheme that it is unaffordable.

Younger people can afford to only take out a hospital plan as a package, but the older people get, the more they need a comprehensive package, which is where the financial bottleneck comes from.
Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS) members will pay significantly more for their medical coverage in 2020.

SAPS medical scheme – R15.7 million of POLMED’s funds ‘looted’ by board of trustees

Millions of rand in alleged “unlawful looting” of the SAPS’s medical scheme POLMED have drawn the ire of scores of police officers, who have slammed the level of coverage received.

Claims are that POLMED, which covers 680,000 members and beneficiaries, has “unlawfully” awarded roughly R15.7 million to its BOT (board of trustees) over three years in alleged contravention of its own rules.

Allegations are also that former National Police Commissioner General, Riah Phiyega, was “illegally” elected on to the BOT in contravention of Rule 18.9.9, which states: “Any person removed from an office of trust on account of misconduct should not serve on it.”

According to rule 18.24, Polmed remuneration should be determined by the scheme’s AGM (annual general meeting) and not by the CMS (Council of Medical Schemes).

By Polmed’s own admission, the scheme hasn’t held an AGM since 2015, with questions being raised

Hy word daarvan beskuldig dat hy die Raad doelbewus mislei het rondom besluite wat geneem is ten gunste van sekere organisasies.

Hy is glo finansieel vergoed vir die “gunste” wat hy aan die partye betoon het en dui op die korrupsie wat tans die nuusblaaie se voorblad oorheers.

SA Consumers rank the best and worst Medical-Aid schemes in SA

The latest South African Customer Satisfaction Index (SAcsi) for medical aids in the country shows which groups have been the most successful in keeping their customers happy in 2016.

A sample of 2,105 private medical aid policyholders in South Africa gave the health insurance industry a satisfaction score of 74.2 out of 100 in the latest index, which is virtually unchanged since the last measure in 2015.

The six companies included in the Medical Aids survey include Bonitas, Discovery Health, Liberty Health, Medihelp, Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) and Momentum Health based on their market share.

The industry saw a change in the leading brand for the first time in three years, with Liberty moving from a below par performance in 2014 to being named as industry leader this year.

Liberty has made remarkable progress and scored an industry-leading 76.9 out of 100. Momentum Health, Bonitas and Discovery Health scored on par with industry at 75.6, 75.
