The Khayelitsha hospital under the spotlight

Poor service at the Khayelitsha District Hospital came under the spotlight at a meeting between hospital management and the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC).

TAC members recounted complaints about staff shortages and bad treatment of patients, issues which had not been resolved in spite of several meetings with management.

Amelia Mfiki said as TAC members were leaving after a meeting last week where they had been told that “everything is good”, a stranger came up to them and complained that a family member who was a patient at the hospital had been wearing the same adult diaper for 24 hours. Staff had not responded to requests to change the diaper.

Private investigators, Hawks called in to probe North West graft

The North West province government has hired private investigators to look into allegations that its health department awarded R180‑million in illegal tenders to the Gupta-linked company Mediosa, provincial spokesperson Brian Setswambung said this week.

The firm Open Water is investigating claims linked to contracts awarded to Mediosa for two mobile clinics.

Meanwhile, the Hawks have also opened an investigation into alleged fraud and corruption within the province’s health department, Hawks regional spokesperson Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso confirmed.

North West health department head Thabo Lekalakala admitted that he had paid Mediosa R30‑million upfront when he appeared before the provincial legislature in February, News24 reported.

Rioters chase doctors away from dying patients at Tshepong hospital

Critically ill patients lay unattended as “tsotsis” denied staff access to Tshepong hospital outside Klerksdorp in the North West on Wednesday and asked doctors to pay R20 to enter their workplace.

Desperate doctors and nurses were eventually flown in by helicopter. But strikers then entered the hospital and forced the nurses to go outside, while overturning rubbish bins. Patients ended up serving patients.

One man, with a gunshot wound to the neck, died. It is not known if he would have survived had he been seen earlier, said doctors at the hospital.

“This is probably the only functional hospital in the province. I don’t see how they can cripple this hospital too,” said one doctor, who did not want to be named.

A surgeon trying to get to work was stormed by thugs wielding bricks. He struggled to get his car keys out of his pocket but managed to drive off just in time.

Cancer patient dies after being sent home because he was ‘going to die anyway’

A DURBAN man diagnosed with stage four cancer was reportedly refused treatment at Addington Hospital. He said he was told he was old and “going to die anyway”. He wanted justice for other elderly patients.

The Sunday Tribune Herald spoke to him earlier in the week, and on Saturday, he died. By this time, the Sunday Tribune Herald had already been printed.

Another project costing a whooping R127-million on a condom no one wanted?

Every year, South Africa distributes tens of millions of female condoms, making the country home to one of the largest female condom programmes in the world, research published in the 2017 South African Health Review (SAHR) shows.

The tenders for these condoms are big business. The government paid billions to suppliers of male and female condoms, as well as lubricants, for three years as part of the most recent tender.

The health department should be commended for ramping up the number of female condoms it has bought and distributed over the past decade, surpassing its own target of 25-million annually in 2015/2016, the research reveals.
