South African commercial banks are basically prepared to help the instable SA Airways with R3.5bn as a lifeline.

The struggling airline needs the funds very urgently to meet his short-term obligations.

SAA’s Chief Executive Officer, Vuyani Jarana, says the amount is needed to maintain its operational duties until April.

Jarana, says it is clear that SAA is under “extremely difficult circumstances” and will not continue to function without the huge loan.

Meanwhile, ANC’s Cyril Ramaphosa, during his visit to India, said the SAA’s flights to the country should resume as well as the flights to the Emirates that were “stolen” from the SAA shipping company.

EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu on Thursday reiterated party leader Julius Malema’s warning that the red berets may disrupt President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 7.

“He must come clean before SONA, otherwise we will invoke ordinary parliamentary proceedings and have SONA converted into a presidential question-and-answer session,” Mpofu told Talk Radio 702’s breakfast host Bongani Bingwa on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, Malema warned that “chaos could erupt again at this year’s SONA”, owing to recent corruption allegations that emerged at the commission of inquiry into state capture.

Malema warned Ramaphosa to come clean on his “dealings with facilities company Bosasa”.

The EFF leader was addressing the media at a briefing at the party’s headquarters in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Fraud “on an enormous scale” has been uncovered in the land reform programme in which government officials handed out farms and millions in grants to beneficiaries who did not qualify.

The details are contained in a report by the Special Investigating Unit which recommends that 42 people, including the government officials, be prosecuted for fraud and corruption linked to land scams. Business Day obtained the report this week through a Promotion to Access to Information application. It was handed to President Cyril Ramaphosa in March 2018.

In recent months there has been conjecture that if South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa wins a suitably large majority of the upcoming national vote, he will be able to achieve two notable outcomes.

Firstly, he’ll be able reverse the governing African National Congress’s (ANC’s) slide into populism and factionalism. And he’ll be able to see off challenges from the radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the country’s third largest party.

The argument is that he would then have a sufficiently strong mandate to undertake economic reforms needed to fix South Africa. This includes broadening competition, limiting the size and scope of the state-owned entities and expanding the public transport system. Other things that need fixing include reducing red tape to boost entrepreneurship and small businesses, improving the education system and trade integration in the region.

The world’s rich are getting richer and the world’s poor are getting richer – except in sub-Saharan Africa where the poor are getting poorer.

Worldwide, the number of billionaires doubled since the 2008 financial crisis.

In 2018 a new world billionaire was created every 2 days.

Last year the super wealthy grew their billions collectively by $2.5bn a day, but billionaires and big corporations are paying lower taxes than they have in decades.

This is according to the latest Oxfam report due to be released on Monday in Johannesburg.

The organisation, founded internationally in 1942, is a nonprofit group of independent charity organisations focusing on the alleviation of global poverty.

The ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced that plans to stabilize Eskom would be announced within “a few weeks”.

According to him, the power supply is therefore unstable. However, he has not expanded what the plans are to pay off the R420bn debt.

He also boasts in Davos that law and order are recovering in the country, but mention nothing of the 50 murders that take place daily in the country.

It is said corruption took place while Ramaphosa was in the seat as the ANC’s deputy president of the country and he did absolutely nothing to stop it. So why will he step in now? To recover under the dispensation of the ANC-regime where many corrupt people are sitting in key positions, will be a very challenging task and in some instances not physically possible.

ANC councillor ‘hiring out’ community hall in Gauteng like it’s his own private business – if you want to use a multi-purpose community centre it’s likely you’ll soon be sent a picture of this man’s bank card

An ANC ward councillor in the Emfuleni local municipality in Gauteng has allegedly turned a community multi-purpose centre into a personal cash cow, renting it out and apparently pocketing the spoils without the knowledge of the municipality.

Elias Raditshila Mokoena, also known as “Ndade”, is a ward 19 councillor in Evaton in the Vaal and he has allegedly been renting out the facility since he was elected after the local government elections in 2016.

According to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in ward 19, Mokoena has pocketed thousands of rands from renting out the community multi-purpose centre under the pretence that he is renovating and maintaining the facility.

“There are no renovations taking place there, it’s a lie. All that the ward councillor is doing is lining his own pockets and those of his friends in the municipality who are allowing this to happen because they are getting money out of it,” said one EFF member who did

Following a 702 headline stating that finance minister Tito Mboewni is set to introduce a bill paving the way for the creation of a state-owned bank in competition with private sector retail and commercial banks, Mboweni and the executive mayor of the city of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina, got into a heated debate over nationalisation.

The ANC Ekurhuleni regional chairperson followed up his retweet of the article with a comment on the idea of nationalising the Reserve Bank (SARB) and the bank’s governor, Lesetja Kganyago, who has been a vocal opponent of the calls for the SARB to be nationalised.

Mboweni responded to Masina’s sentiments by calling his views misguided while reiterating his respect for the young mayor.

Railway engineer and analyst Dr Willem Sprong says the rail network can still be saved, but only just.

With only three months left on their contracts, the Passenger Rail Agency SA’s (Prasa) board still has time and money to fix the failing agency.

This is according to railway engineer and analyst Dr Willem Sprong, who is technical director for railway engineering at Gibb Engineering.

Sprong has over 20 years’ experience in the industry.

It’s not a secret that Prasa and, in fact, the national rail system are in serious trouble.

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande appointed an interim board last year with a one-year mandate to change “the state of paralysis” at the rail agency.

Since their appointment, a number of accidents have led to deaths and injuries.

The ANC’s secretary-general, Ace Magashule has revealed the ANC’s plans regarding the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). A couple days after the party’s NEC had their Lekgotla meeting, Magashule has returned with shocking news of the party’s aim: to nationalise the central bank.

South Africa’s reserve bank is one of the fewest central banks, in the world, that have private shareholders.

The Citizen, the bank has over 261 000 shares split between more than 600 private shareholders, with Parliament only able to function in a supervisory role within the spectrum.

Many of these shares are owned by people who do not reside in South Africa, the majority shareholder being Michael Duerr, a German with a 57.5% ownership stake in the central bank.
