The government as Telkom’s largest shareholder has called for an urgent meeting to discuss the company’s plan for retrenching thousands of redundant workers.

Earlier last week, Telkom announced its intention to lay off about 3,000 workers, which is a fifth of its total workforce.

The Department of Communications and Digital Technology has announced that Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has expressed her concern about Telkom’s intention, and therefore wants to hold an urgent meeting.

Telkom’s shares rose 8% last week after the announcement of the retrenchment of 3,000 people.

Several economic experts believe Telkom has at least 4,500 excess staff, which has a direct impact on the profitability of the entity.

Even if you are the president of SA you are not above the law! – Ramaphosa faces possible Labour Court action for retrenching farm staff

The ANC’s president is not above the law, and his so-called cases of dismissing 22 of his 46 farm workers could land him in the Labor Court. Cyril Ramaphosa dismissed the farm workers in his service, and used the excuse that it was a business decision because foot-and-mouth disease could threaten his cattle herd. No one has yet been able to explain what the illness has to do with his staff’s dismissal, and now unions apparently want to drag their president to the Labor Court.

The farm workers’ union, Fawu, is apparently at the forefront and has threatened to take President Cyril Ramaphosa to task over allegations that he retrenched over half of his Ntaba Nyoni farm staff, in October. Death bells are ringing for SAA due to impending strike

The impending strike at SAA by the SA Cabin Staff Association and Numsa could mean the end of the airline. In the meantime, the Pilot Association announced that they supported the idea and that the state entity’s overall top management should be replaced. Furthermore, they threatened to act if a Chief Executive with no experience aviation experience and knowledge are appointed.

The imminent strike comes after SAA announced that a restructuring will take place to make the entity more cost effective. The SAA’s enormous debt burden means that it has no choice but to lay off about 1,000 staff members, but the unions threaten to call a large-scale strike if retrenchments continue.

Persons who will use SAA’s services on Friday 15 November 2019 were advised to make alternative arrangements as all flights for Friday and Saturday were canceled considering the impending strike.
