AfriForum’s Ernst Roets not in contempt of court over apartheid flag tweet – Roets said he was posing an academic question with his tweet
Johannesburg – The Equality Court on Tuesday ruled that AfriForum deputy chief executive Ernst Roets was not in contempt of court when he tweeted an image of the offensive apartheid flag.
Roets posted the image on Twitter soon after the Equality Court, sitting at the South Gauteng High Court, declared that the gratuitous display of the apartheid flag amounts to hate speech.
Judge Phineas Mojapelo said displaying the old flag constituted hate speech and discrimination based on race. He added that the apartheid-era flag be allowed for academic, artistic and journalistic use only if there was a need and permission to do so.
Roets’ offensive post prompted the Nelson Mandela Foundation to file bring an urgent application to the court.
However, Roets dismissed suggestions that he disrespected the judgment. Instead he said the court ruled the flag could be used for artistic, journalistic and academic purposes.

Ramaphosa creates the impression that racism is only a white problem
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s reaction on Radio 702 when asked about the hate speech of BLF leader, Andile Mngxitama, is disappointing as he shifted the focus to white people as if to imply that racism is mainly a white problem.
According to media reports, President Ramaphosa implied that racism is not common among black people and that Mngxitama is probably just “a lone voice out there in the wilderness”.
President Ramaphosa also added that “we cannot, through the hatred of some white people then begin to define the whole white community as haters of black people”. And: we must say that those who hate black people and those who are racist must be isolated. We must teach them the best ways to be a nation.
