The government’s grand move to have “progressed” matric pupils write their exams over two years has bombed – only 8% passed

The results of these pupils, who were pushed into matric after failing grade 11 more than once, were disclosed to the Sunday Times by the department of basic education last week.

SA’s latest matric pass rate is 8%. It was achieved by “progressed” pupils — those pushed into grade 12 after failing grade 11 more than once — and who were given two years to write matric.

Of the 78,363 of these pupils who wrote their final school exams in November and June, 6,320 passed.

Education experts who spoke to the Sunday Times this week said the pupils had been set up for failure because the plan was based on an incorrect assumption that a lowered workload would lead to better results.

SAPS medical scheme – R15.7 million of POLMED’s funds ‘looted’ by board of trustees

Millions of rand in alleged “unlawful looting” of the SAPS’s medical scheme POLMED have drawn the ire of scores of police officers, who have slammed the level of coverage received.

Claims are that POLMED, which covers 680,000 members and beneficiaries, has “unlawfully” awarded roughly R15.7 million to its BOT (board of trustees) over three years in alleged contravention of its own rules.

Allegations are also that former National Police Commissioner General, Riah Phiyega, was “illegally” elected on to the BOT in contravention of Rule 18.9.9, which states: “Any person removed from an office of trust on account of misconduct should not serve on it.”

According to rule 18.24, Polmed remuneration should be determined by the scheme’s AGM (annual general meeting) and not by the CMS (Council of Medical Schemes).

The Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth has suspended lectures yesterday due to student protests. Protesters blocked off the entrances to the campus with tyres and debris over a lack of security. The students said there has been a high rate of crime on campus including rape and violent assault.

There were also reports of clashes with security guards.

The university’s Zandile Mbalela said: “As a precautionary measure against the possible escalation of matters, the university then took a decision to temporarily suspend, until further notice, physical lectures. We encourage our lecturers and students to continue the learning and teaching mandate using alternative platforms.”

Cyril who? US reporter refers to Ramaphosa as ‘unidentified leader’

An American journalist has drawn the ire of South Africans after she tweeted a picture of world leaders at the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France, identifying three heads of state except for President Cyril Ramaphosa, whom she refers to as an “unidentified leader”.

Darlene Superville, a White House correspondent for the Associated Press, tweeted on Sunday: “World leader bear hug before the group photo @ #G7Summit in Biarritz, France. @EmmanuelMacron @narendramodi @JustinTrudeau and one unidentified leader.”

She tagged Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, and Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, but somehow could not identify Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa arrived at the summit on Sunday and aims to market South Africa as an investment destination and trade partner during the summit, Fin24 reported.

“Untouchable” BOSASA CEO dies in car crash – case of culpable homicide has been opened

CEO of controversial company Bosasa, now African Global Operations, Gavin Watson (73) died on Monday in a car crash. The crash happened close to OR Tambo International Airport.

While the police have not released the identity of the man as they are waiting to notify his next of kin, Eyewitness News has learnt that it is Watson.

“The man was driving into the airport precinct, when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and collided with a concrete pillar holding up a highway bridge. The victim was certified dead on the scene by paramedics and a case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation,” the police said through a statement on Monday.

Watson and some top managers at his company – including former COO Angelo Agrizzi – were also implicated as having given government officials money and other lavish gifts in exchange for favours.
